Reading And Leeds 2022

by Olivia Mannix

It’s official – 2 of the biggest festivals of the year are happening this weekend! So let’s sit back and reflect on the iconic festival. In this post, we’re finding out why and when the huge party started, its locations, the festival’s biggest headliners, and more!

Reading is the world’s oldest popular music festival still in existence and began in 1971. Leeds however didn’t catch on until 28 years later in 1999 – making it the younger of the two festivals! Before it became the festival we know it as today, the Beaulieu Jazz Festival and National Jazz Festival used to take place in the same locations, running from 1955-1961 (Beaulieu) and 1961-1970 (National). The current two-site format was adopted in 1999, to allow more people from all over the country to visit. The fesitvals cater for a wide range of music genres – rock, alternative, indie, punk, and metal to mention just a few. More recently hip hop has comprised an increasing proportion of the lineup, including headline sets by artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone.

Speaking of headlining acts, Leeds and Reading have been home to many of the greatest music legends in history. Starting with one of the greatest bands to ever perform at the festival; Nirvana. Tragically their final performance in the United Kingdom, and their one and only time at Reading, has arguably never been topped by anyone, even though it’s been 30 years since their memorable act. Biffy Clyro, the infamous British rock band, also put on a fantastic show for their first ever festival headline – leaving not a single dry eye in the house (or should we say field?) back in 2013. Foo Fighters (2002), Greenday (2004) and Metallica (1997) have also been dubbed as some of the most iconic performances in the history of the festival.

At this year’s sold-out festival, 00’s legends Arctic Monkeys are headlining Saturday and Sunday’s East Stages, whilst Megan Thee Stallion dominates the West on Friday and Saturday. Also performing, is the British Rapper Dave, pop band The 1975, American singer Halsey and many more famous faces. It is going to be a treat!

We’re sure that this year’s Leeds and Reading Festival will be one of the best. Make sure to tag us in any of your festival posts on Instagram so we can see what you’re up to!
