Call of Duty Ranking: From Worst To Best

by Luke Wheeler

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II has finally released, and this game looks great from all the teasers and gameplay. Call of Duty fans all around the world are excited for this one! The CoD franchise has been smashing out games since 2003 and have established themselves as one of the biggest first-person shooters of all time. A large majority of Call of Duty fans have spent most their childhood playing these games and have built memories and friends for life through the years which makes Call of Duty so special.

As it is that time of the year, we thought we would rank every Call of Duty from worst to best based on gameplay and popularity. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has not been included on this list as it is far too early to judge where it would rank in this list so let’s get started…

18) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

When you think of Call of Duty, the 2006 futuristic Infinite Warfare isn’t one that particularly springs to mind due to how quickly the hype died off since its release. It is also very difficult to bring in jetpack games when boots on the ground CoDs have been so popular. Nothing really stood out in this game, earning it the 18th place.

17) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

There is not much difference between Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare and that is an issue for Call of Duty games. Every year, Activision try to incorporate something new into the new upcoming game but with these two, they are too similar in terms of the futurist gameplay, weapons, and maps.

16) Call of Duty

Taking it right back to the very start. In 2003, Activision released the original Call of Duty, and this is what kickstarted the whole franchise. The reason this game is 16th on this list is because as it was the first Call of Duty, it was a foundation that left many improvements to be made in the future games and the gameplay wasn’t the best.

15) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

If you are going to bring back a name of the classics that are the Modern Warfare games, you need to do it right, and Activision didn’t hit the heights with this one. The best things about this game are the graphics and the introduction of 2v2 gunfight which was very popular among competitive gamers but everything else let this game down.

14) Call of Duty 2

This was Activation’s second shot at first-person shooters, and this was a big improvement. Releasing alongside the highly anticipated Xbox 360, Its story mode gave more of an action-packed game which sparked the interest in the franchise from OG players. Call of Duty 2 isn’t any higher on this list because of popularity compared to others.

13) Call of Duty: WWII

A World War 2 based game was being asked for a while from fans and WWII hit the shelves after the series of jetpack games had their period. The standout from this game was the single player, as they put a lot of time and effort into the cinematics by really trying to capture the scenes of what this war was like but again, multiplayer wasn’t invested in enough.

12) Call of Duty: Ghosts

One positive from the game is the introduction of Riley the dog in the campaign which produced a different dynamic to the game that hadn’t been done before. The multiplayer is very torn among CoD gamers due to the illusion that the health was reduced. Some players liked this, and others took a disliking to it. So, for this reason, Ghosts is awarded the 12th spot.

11) Call of Duty: Cold War

Similarly to Call of Duty: Ghosts, players are torn between if this was a good game or bad. Some believe the weapons and zombies are standouts in this game and others were left wanting more from the lack of maps. And the developers, Treyarch, are known for their memorable maps such as the many classics from Black Ops 2 but didn’t invest too much time into the maps from Cold War which let this game down.

10) Call of Duty: Vanguard

Now moving into the top 10. Kicking it off with Call of Duty Vanguard and this went down particularly well among CoD fans overall due to its fun and fast paced gameplay. Its release was off the back of the highly popular battle royale game mode “Warzone”, and this boosted Vanguard as players felt like Call of Duty was back in its peak.

9) Call of Duty: Black Ops III

This period of Call of Duty games was a difficult one due to the high tech, jetpack games which left fans wondering where the franchise will be left in the future. With the addition of Black Ops III to this series, fans were underwhelmed as the Black Ops trilogy had high expectations following the previous two. Activision added specialist characters as new aspect to game, but it didn’t live up to the hype of the other Black Ops games and therefore it hasn’t ranked higher.

8) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

I’m surprised myself that the first Call of Duty without a story mode has made it into 8th place but everything else makes up for it. The battle royale game mode “Blackout” was implemented, and it still has loyal fans to this day. Gunplay was massively upgraded and focused more on the first-person shooting rather than movement which players enjoyed.

7) Call of Duty: World at War

World at War is considered an all-round great game by users. A lot of nostalgia is embedded in this game from the introduction of Nazi zombies which was a in instant success among CoD fans. And all things considered, the graphics were very good for its time which added to the gameplay and really captivated the hearts of fans.

6) Call of Duty 3

Call of Duty 3 was pivotal in the franchise’s future. This game has received mixed opinions but overall, this game was a classic. Critics would tip CoD 3 much further down this list due to the bugs and glitches within the game, but others felt like this added to their gaming experience. Many fans believe this was the game that shaped the rest of the Call of Dutys. The foundation was there to improve year on year which made the more recent ones as good as they could be.

5) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

We are now into the top 5 and taking the number 5 spot is Modern Warfare 3! An all-round great game and definitely one people still love to play 11 years later. Brilliant maps, a great story line following on from MW2 and a lot of memories were made on this game. And the change of killstreaks to point streaks was a big move that was liked by the majority of the community.

4) Call of Duty: Black Ops

Black Ops was the first of its kind and it certainly was a fan favourite among gamers. The story line has one of the best scripts on the franchise and really captivated fans along with the endless fun on multiplayer. The Nazi zombies improved drastically and the DLC maps were a perfect edition to the game too. The reason this game is so high on the list is the fact that you were never bored because every aspect was great.

3) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

CoD 4 was the first of the Modern Warfare series and what a game it was. It is one of the most beloved games of the Call of Duty franchise due to the addition of some memorable characters that still appear in the games to this day. The game was such a favourite that it became remastered and was still just as popular 9 years after its original release and for that reason, number 3 is where Call of Duty 4 sits.

2) Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Missing out on the top spot is BO2 but it wasn’t an easy choice. Again, a perfectly well-rounded game as they gave a follow on form the cold war with a more futuristic setting. The multiple-choice dialogue campaign was a great concept and brought a whole new feel to single player modes which started to fall off around this time.

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

And taking the gold medal is Modern Warfare 2. I think many of you could’ve guessed this game would top this list due to the popularity of this masterpiece. Some of the missions in the campaign were some of the most memorable in all CoDs and the introduction of more iconic characters like Ghost and Soap. Some of the most recognisable maps were created in this game and are still favourites among fans 13 years on, not to mention the weapons too and this why we believe MW2 is the greatest Call of Duty ever made.
