Fantasy Football: Ones To Watch this week

by Chris Balding

This week’s action saw title contenders go head to head as Liverpool drew at home to 10-men Chelsea, Arsenal’s torrid time continued as they got thrashed 5-0 to Man City and Burnley and Newcastle finally got their first points of the campaign with draws to Leeds and Southampton respectively.

With just four teams securing clean sheets this week there were plenty of points to be won in fantasy, let’s take a look at the best players this week and discuss whether they should be in your team.

Ferran Torres (£7.1m)

The Man City man was a key player this week in their demolition of Arsenal, scoring two and providing an assist as well as securing a clean sheet. With City being unable or reluctant to replace Sergio Auergo and Gabriel Jesus enjoying his time on the right wing we are seeing that Torres is getting plenty of game-time playing the number 9 role. As previously mentioned he also received points for clean sheets because he is typically a midfielder so picking him for your team is a great option. However, you do need to consider that the Champions League starts back up on the 14th of September so expect Pep to start rotating his squad members which might see Torres lose some game-time especially with Phil Foden and Kevin De Brunye coming back from injury.

Conor Gallagher (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace finally scored their first goals of the season this weekend with both goals coming from Chelsea’s Loanee Conor Gallagher. The England under 21 star made a big impact for Patrick Veria side as he scored his first goals for Palace, one coming from an acute finish in the box and the other coming from a moment of magic as his skilled turn in the box gave him the space from the defenders to be able slott the ball home. With the way Veria wants Palace to play this could mean that Gallagher could become a key man for the Eagles, especially going forward which could mean plenty of points.

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m)

A familiar name and favourite fantasy football pick, Jamie Vardy had a good weekend in terms of results and points. Scoring a goal and providing an assist saw him put up good returns for anybody who selected him for their fantasy team. So far he has scored in 2/3 games this season and we believe he can keep up this form throughout the season. Just one thing to bear in mind is that Lecister are playing Man City next but even though we expect Leicester to lose they are more than capable of scoring a goal or two as in their last match they managed 2 goals from just 3 shots, talk about taking your chances!

Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m)

Pep has seemed to take Gabriel Jesus’ game to the next level by moving him over to the right hand side. So far this season he has a goal and two assists and had chances to improve this tally. Being in this Man City team will mean that he will get plenty of chances to create and score goals as they look to demolish the majority of the teams in the Prem. With Bernado Silva expressing interest to move away from City, Guardiola is more likely to give Jesus more game time this season. However PSG have mentioned that if they are forced to sell Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid then Jesus is an option they would likely pursue.

Raphaël Varane (£5.5m)

The world class defender made his debut this weekend for Man United and no surprise they won and secured a clean sheet. Varane played the full 90 and with them playing Newcastle after the international break we expect Varane to earn himself more clean sheet points. In their recent 1-0 win over Wolves not only did he get a clean sheet but also managed to provide an assist too. Not sure if you know but Ronaldo is rejoining the reds so expect big things from this team as teams will now dread to play them.

Michail Antonio (£7.9m)

West Ham’s main man continues his great start to the season adding a goal and assist to his already impressive stats (4 goals and 4 assists). This week’s results mean that Antonio remains the player with the most points so far this season and for £7.9m is a bargain, especially as he has 10 points more than the next top point scorer. West Ham’s next game is against Southampton who have conceded 6 goals in 3 matches so adding these stats with Antonio’s personal ones we think he is a must have for your team. Most of you agree with our point as he has a 47.4% selection rate.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)

The Egyptian King is another player who is labeled as a midfielder even though he is clearly cemented upfront and we all know that means loads of points. So far Salah has earned 2 goals, 2 assists as well as 2 clean sheets which is a great start to the season and with his pal Virgil van Dijk coming back from injury Liverpool will have the opportunity to replicate their title winning 2019–20 campaign. Salah is also a penalty taker for Liverpool which makes him more valuable and a reason to justify his hefty price tag. Liverpool take on Leeds next who have yet managed to keep a clean sheet and we can’t see them achieving one against Liverpool.

Heung-Min Son (£10.1m)

Spurs’ great start and 100% win record is partly due to Son’s key goals for the club. So far he has netted two goals and has established himself as a key member of the new manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s team. Much like Salah and Torres, Son is also a midfield player who can earn clean sheets which he has achieved in every game so far. With Harry Kane now somewhat committed to the club we expect to see their link up play come to fruition, adding more goals and assists to Son’s tally.
