Fantasy Football; Ones to watch

by Chris Balding

As the Premier League campaign moves into gameweek 8 we take a look back at the weekend’s action to see who made the biggest impression and why you should pick them for your fantasy team.

Half of the weekend’s matches ended in draws but don’t be thinking it wasn’t a good weekend of football. Highlights came from an electric second half at Anfield saw title contenders Liverpool and Man City end in a stalemate, Spurs ended their losing streak, Brentford continued to shock fans with their results and Leeds picked up a vital win.

Andros Townsend (5.5m)

A previous favourite of Rafael Benítez at Newcastle, Townsend was brought into the Everton squad this season and Rafa has once again put his trust in Townsend to perform at Everton and it is turning out to be a great decision. Townsend has struggled for some of his previous teams but he seems to be enjoying his football under Rafa who is getting the best out of him. So far this season he has scored more goals than he managed in his last two seasons for Palace (5 goals for Everton Vs 2 goals for Palace). His fantastic form was evident in Everton’s game at Old Trafford as Townsend finished a great counter attack.

Phil Foden (£7.9m)

There’s a reason they call him ‘Filth Foden’ and his latest display against Liverpool just shows why. He was a constant thorn in the side of Liverpool’s defence as he stormed down the wing, scoring a goal and should have been awarded a penalty too. He’s not had much game time this season however he has been featured in the last two games which have been the biggest games of the season for City as they played both Chelsea and Liverpool away so Pep definitely has faith in the young England international. Now he’s got himself a goal we should see him repay Pep’s faith in him with more great performances.

Jamie Vardy (10.4m)

Jamie Vardy should be called Mr consistent as he always ends the season with great numbers and this season is looking no different. Although Leicester as a team aren’t performing that great, Vardy’s tally so far for the season is impressive with 6 goals in 7 matches and 1 assist do we need to say anymore. Leicester play Man Utd next weekend but with the way United are playing I wouldn’t let that put you off picking the Foxes front man for your team.

Pontus Jansson (£4.6m)

The club captain has been vital to Brentford’s success so far this season leading the team from the back with his centre half pair, Ethan Pinnock. For a relatively low price of just 4.6m he’s definitely a bargain. The big man isn’t shy going forward either, providing 3 assists so far this season which is rare for a centre back. He also has 3 clean sheets so far and with the way Brentford are playing he could be a great return on investment for your team.

Heung-Min Son (10m)

After a great start for Spurs their performances have been sub par losing their last 3 games however this week they managed to beat a dangerous Villa side 2-1. The common theme in the game was Son was providing assists. Son set up Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura which ended his personal nine run game without an assist. Now his teammates are helping out with scoring goals this should hopefully take the pressure off, leading to more goals and assists for the Korean superstar and maybe his link up with Kane will flourish again. Spurs take on Newcastle in their next game who are fitting for survival and we’re predicting a goal fest.

Hee-Chan Hwang (5.5m)

Another brilliant South Korean addition to the Premier League is Hee-Chan Hwang who is a much needed finisher for Wolves. This weekend was only his second ever game for Wolves since joining the club on loan from RB Leipzig. His link up Raúl Jiménez seems like they’ve been playing together for much longer than they actually have. He managed to take Adama Traoré starting place in the team which is no mean feat. At the weekend against Newcastle Hwang scored two neat goals with Jiménez providing both assists. Hwang should have had an assist too if Francisco Trincao had not hit the bar from 8 yards out. We’re looking forward to seeing more from Hwang and are excited to see him live up to his nickname ‘The Bull’.
