For diehard fans of adidas and terrace subcultures, Gary Aspden is a God-like figure. Recently hitting the news with big releases like the adidas Blackburn and Winterhill, he was a pioneering figure in revitalising the ever-classic Spezial range back in 2014.

Gary’s first Spezial drop featured a fresh silhouette that draws on archival tennis shoes from the 70s like the adidas Newcombe. By injecting the terrace DNA of the 90s adidas years into these staple trainers, the result was the Lacombe SPZL. An instant Euro casual classic.

Originally introduced in 2016 as part of Gary Aspden’s SPEZIAL line, the adidas Lacombe trainer was treated to a global 3 stripes release in 2019. What we have with the Lacombe in a nutshell is a reissue of a vintage casual staple with a touch of European styling. Class. Picture the tennis greats from the 60s, 70s and 80s. We’re talking the Rod Lavers, Stan Smiths and John Newcombes of that era. The trainers they were wearing were all clean white court shoes, with a splash of three stripes styling. Essentially, Aspden is bringing this look back to the 21st century through the Lacombe.

A couple of years on from that limited drop, the Lacombe has proved itself to the point of a global adidas release. With the guys over at adidas naming us as one of two ‘Terrace Specialists’ in the U.K. we were sure to get our hands on a piece of the collection.

A closer look sheds light on some of the crisp details shows why this shoe is being received as an instant classic. Contrast adidas panels to the tongue and perforated three stripes branding add that touch of class, while a rubber cup sole with OrthoLite sock liner maintain that exceptional comfort that we’re used to getting from the adidas team.

Highlights of the 1970s hybrid tennis shoe include a contrasting tongue and heel tab with leather uppers and the signature perforated 3 stripes as adorned by many legendary adidas tennis styles. The addition of the toe stitched top piece to the toe vamp gives a nod to the original Newcombe design for a clean and contemporary trainer.
