by Luke Wheeler

As this World Cup is ever closing in on the finale and England have sadly exited, why not reminisce on some of England’s greatest moments! There are plenty to choose from, but we have funnelled it down to just 7 moments that everyone will remember for a long time.

7. Sturridge Slays The Dragon

As late goals go, this is up there! Daniel Sturridge’s slalom through the Welsh defence earned England their first win at the 2016 Euros. A tough game as England had to come from behind and Sturridge pulled it out the bag at the death! A memorable moment that everyone knows where they were when this goal went in.

6. Owen’s Solo Brilliance vs Argentina

This was the standout moment from England’s campaign from the 98 World Cup. Hoddles red and white army were on the ropes as Argentina were leading 2-1 and Beckham got sent for an early bath. But Owen took things into his own hands and produced a fine solo goal picking the ball up around the halfway line, weaving past Argentinians, and sticking the ball into the onion bag.

5. Shaw’s Volley vs Italy in Euro 2020 Final

Trippier’s ball to the back post met by Shaw with a sublime volley off the post and in is an iconic goal and was the peak of English international football since 66. It sent Wembley and the rest of the Country into chaos. The fastest ever goal in a European championship final. But unfortunately, it was too soon for the three lions. The reason this moment isn’t higher up on the list is because of the outcome of the game. But nevertheless, this was the biggest goal in England’s modern history and what a great goal it was.

4. Gazza’s Magic vs Scotland

One of the most famous celebrations produced by England (alongside Crouch’s robot), accompanied by one of England’s greatest goals, what a moment for the three lions! Gazza left Colin Hendry for dead by flicking the ball over him then volleying the ball home, followed by that iconic water bottle celebration.

3. Beckham Sends England To The World Cup

Everything about this moment was special. The circumstances, the goal, the commentary, and the kit. One of the best free kick takers the game has ever seen steps up curl the ball over the wall into the top corner to put England through to the world cup! As soon as the ball left Becks’ foot, you just knew that was going to nestle into the top bins.

2. England 5-1 Germany

One of England’s most memorable games took place in Germanys backyard and England battered them. Germany scored first with Jancker heading the ball past Seaman then England stepped up the gears and knocked 5 past the Germans to create a memorable night for all England fans. Owen with a hattrick, Gerrards first goal for England scored in Gerrard fashion, and even Heskey scored to top off a legendary day.

1. They Think It’s All Over… It Is Now!

There could only be one winner here couldn’t there? Our World Cup win in 1966. Our only star above our badge came from these national heroes. A World Cup held in our home nation, we had to bring it home. This is where this iconic photo was born and will forever live on. Unfortunately we couldn’t make it two this year but with the talent in our squad, we’re certainly hopeful the boys can bring it home in the next major tournament!

That rounds up our greatest England football moments! Some absolute corkers in there that many will remember for a very long time. They all went down in history in their own unique way, and thats why they deserved their place on this list. There were many more to choose from, but these were our favourites!
