Air Max Day 2022: Celebrating The 35th Anniversary

by Matthew Thomas

Happy Air Max Day 2022! It’s that time of year again when we celebrate all that is Nike Air Max. This year is special though, it’s the 35th Anniversary of the Nike Air Max cushioning system.

Here at scotts, we love everything Nike Air Max and have a great selection available online here. Don’t worry though, if you’re just a fan of Nike in general (who isn’t by the way) then you can shop our entire Nike collection here.

What is Air Max Day?

Air Max Day started in March 2014 when Nike decided to dedicate 26th March to everything Air Max. Quickly the day of celebration became more of a month. Throughout March, we are blessed with lots of exclusive releases, special events and engaging content to provide us all with our Air Max fix.

We’re going to take you back through the years with a look at the best of Air Max Day from 2014 to 2022.

2014

In 2014, we saw the first ever Nike Air Max Day. Nike released a special pair of Air Max 1 which combined the iconic OG Air Max 1 upper with a striking volt green midsole. To top it off the pair featured 3.26 on the tongue which represented the date of Air Max Day. A great collector’s piece.

2015

In 2015, Nike took it back to the drawing board. They released a brand new silhouette dubbed “The 1 before the 1” which was introduced as the Air Max Zero. This was Tinker Hatfield’s original design for the Air Max 1 brought to life.

2016

In 2016, instead of having just one key release, Nike produced a new set of special HTM releases. HTM stands for Hiroshi Fujiwara, Tinker Hatfield and Mark Parker. These special pairs were the Air Max LD Zero, Air Max 90 Ultra Superfly, and the Air Max Ultra.

2017

In 2017, Nike Air Max turned 30 years old. This time Nike switched it up again, releasing multiple pairs on the build up to Air Max Day. The big collector’s piece was the Air Max 1 ‘Master’ and the Air Max 1 ‘Elephant’. What stole the show though was the Vapormax, Nike’s first really progressive pair of Air Max for years.

2018

In 2018, on the build up to Air Max Day, Nike released the Air Max 270, the Air Vapormax Flyknit 2.0, the Nike Air Vapormax 97 as well as the iconic Air Max 1/97 by Sean Wotherspoon. The Air Max 270 was Nike’s first Air Max lifestyle shoe. The main event on the day was the ‘Nike: On Air’ workshop where individuals got to design their own Air Max sneakers with the chance to see one on shelves in stores.

2019

In 2019, Nike released a few of the samples from the ‘On Air’ workshop held in 2018. Air Max Day in 2019 was not about buying sneakers and was in fact about giving sneakers to others with Nike’s ‘Give Fresh Air’ campaign. The pairs due to launch on Air Max Day instead launched throughout the year.

2020

In 2020, Nike had a big focus on the Air Max 90 with it turning 30 years old, various Max 90’s were launched throughout the year. They also released the Air Max 2090 which paid homage to the Max 90 whilst giving it a modern 2020 refresh.

2022

It’s 2022, and Nike are hitting us with multiple must-have releases. All eyes are on the Air Max 1, the silhouette that kicked it all off in 1987. Nike has multiple colourways and special pairs releasing throughout the year.
